The Deep Center is an award-winning education nonprofit in Savannah, Georgia. We provide writing workshops and publication for public school students; we recruit and train local writers to mentor middle school kids through the creative writing process.
Deep, a 501(c)3 nonprofit located in downtown Savannah, Georgia, was founded in 2008 to address the problem of illiteracy in Savannah, Georgia. Since then, our mission has evolved. Not only do we work on improving literacy, but we work on improving motivation; we help them improve because we get kids excited about writing. In our programs with our method, kids experience the joy that comes from writing and sharing their stories with skill, confidence, and courage.
Deep started with two workshops in 2009, and since then, we’ve grown about ten times larger in order to meet the demand for our programming at fifteen locations, including every middle school in the district.
In total, since 2008, Deep has served more than 1200 students recommended by teachers at 21 Partner Schools, trained more than 100 Writing Fellows, produced 52 anthologies of student writing, and published a successful middle school creative writing curriculum.
